> Q) How soon can I apply for financial aid?

A) January 1st of the school year for which you are applying.

> Q) How long will it take to complete the form?

A) Federal Student Aid estimates that for first-time users, FAFSA on the Web will take you less than one hour to complete. It takes less time to complete a pre-filed FAFSA on the Web or Corrections on the Web.

> Q) What is the deadline for filing a FAFSA?

A) Federal Student Financial Aid Deadlines are as follows:

2008-2009 School Year
(July 1st, 2008 - June 30th, 2009):

> FAFSA Web applications must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30, 2009.

> Corrections on the Web forms must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight Time, September 15, 2009.

Tip: Marygrove must have your complete and correct information by your last day of enrollment in the 2008-2009 school year.

2009-2010 School Year
(July 1st, 2009 - June 30th, 2010):

> FAFSA Web applications must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30, 2010.

> Corrections on the Web forms must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, September 15, 2010.

TIP: Marygrove must have your complete and correct information by your last day of enrollment in the 2009-2010 school year.

> Q) What happens after I submit my FAFSA form?

A) We will mail you a paper Student Aid Report (SAR), or you will receive an e-mail that lets you access your electronic SAR. Your SAR will contain either a request for further information or a number called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Your school uses the EFC to determine the amount of your federal grants, loans, or work-study awards for which you may be eligible.

Your school, your state, or Federal Student Aid may ask you to verify the accuracy of the information you gave on your application.

If an asterisk (*) displays next to the EFC it means the application has been selected for verification. Verification is a process where your school verifies certain data reported on your FAFSA. To complete this process, your school may ask you for documentation that supports income and other information reported on your FAFSA.

If a “C” displays next to the EFC, it means that information on your Student Aid Report (SAR) is questionable and needs to be corrected.

> Q) How long before I receive my SAR?

A) If you apply via mail, you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) in approximately 2-3 weeks. If you apply electronically, approximately 1 week.

> Q) I received financial aid this school year, when should I apply for next year?

A) You will need to file the renewal FAFSA by March 1 for the next fall/winter/summer year.

> Q) What are some time-saving tips?

A)

> Plan ahead – gather required information like your Social Security Number, driver’s license, income tax returns and investment records before you begin. For a complete listing of the documents you will need to complete the FAFSA, click here.

> Sneak a peek - Print a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet to see how the FAFSA is organized; ask your parents to provide you with the information requested of them (if you are a dependent student).

> Take it one step at a time - Once you begin filling out your FAFSA, you can save it whenever you want, and then complete and submit it later at your convenience.

TIP: The information you save will be secure and available for you to retrieve and edit for 45 days. Saved applications are erased after 45 days or after the federal application/correction deadline date.

> Q) How do I electronically sign a FAFSA?

A) The application process is faster if you use your PIN to sign your application electronically. If you already have a PIN you can use it to sign your FAFSA from one year to the next.

If you have not previously received a PIN, you have several
options to apply for a PIN and have it delivered to you.

> Access Federal Student Aid’s PIN Web site at www.pin.ed.gov and select Apply For A PIN. You may select one of the following PIN delivery methods:

  1. Instantly select or view your PIN online.
  2. Receive an e-mail with the PIN immediately.
  3. Request the PIN be mailed to you
    (approximately 7-10 days for delivery).

> Apply for a PIN while filling out the FAFSA. You may select one of the following PIN delivery methods:

  1. Instantly select or view your PIN online. You may use it right away to sign your FAFSA.
  2. Receive an e-mail with the PIN immediately. You may use it right away to sign your FAFSA.
  3. Request the PIN be mailed to you
    (approximately 7-10 days for delivery).

TIP: A PIN that is selected or viewed instantly online or is sent to you in an e-mail is considered to be conditional until your information is verified with the Social Security Administration (1-3 days from the date you first apply). You may sign your FAFSA with it but nothing else. Once we complete this verification, you will be able to use your PIN for other purposes (such as correcting your SAR or accessing other Federal Student Aid Web sites). At the time your PIN becomes permanent, we will apply your electronic signature to your FAFSA and process it.

If you have submitted a FAFSA without a signature, you need to provide it to complete the submission process. Once you have your PIN you can sign your FAFSA electronically by selecting Sign Electronically With Your PIN under the Filling Out a FAFSA section of the home page.

> Q) I forgot my PIN. What do I do?

A) If you have lost or forgotten your PIN you need to request a duplicate. You can request a duplicate PIN by selecting Request A Duplicate PIN from the list on the left side of the PIN Home Page. You must provide your Challenge Answer in order to request a duplicate PIN.

Complete your request and select the delivery method for receiving your PIN. You may receive your PIN instantly by viewing it online or requesting a PIN e-mail. Or, you can request that your PIN be mailed to you.

> Q) How can I tell if my application has been submitted successfully?

A) The last page of the online FAFSA/correction submission process will be a “Confirmation Page” with a “Confirmation Number” that serves as proof of a successful submission. We recommend that you print this confirmation page for your records. At a minimum, all confirmation numbers will contain the following information:

> Your Social Security Number

> The first two letters of your last name

> The date the application or correction is submitted
(all dates are in Central Time)

TIP: Depending on the type of application you have filed, your “Confirmation Number” may also begin with either nine numbers or a single letter.

> Q) How do I check the status of my application?

A) You should wait three days after submitting your application electronically before checking the status.

> Select Check Status of a Submitted FAFSA or Print Signature Page under the FAFSA Follow-Up section of the home page.

> Enter your Social Security Number, your first and last name, your date of birth, and the year of the FAFSA you completed.

> Select Submit.

> Read all of the notes on the screen as the instructions vary according to your application’s status.

> Q) How will I receive my financial aid?

A) Your federal student aid will be paid to you through your school.

> An award letter from your school will notify you of your aid package.

> Your aid will likely be distributed each semester, quarter, or other payment period.

> Your school will first use the aid to pay tuition, fees, and room and board, if necessary. Money left over for other expenses will be paid to you directly.

> Q) I’ve been selected for verification. What does
that mean?

A) The federal processor has the right to verify any and all information you submit on your FAFSA. If you are selected for verification, you must provide all required documentation before your financial aid award will be completed.

Marygrove typically completes the verification step in ten days or less, after receipt of verification documents.

> Q) I’ve been selected for verification and need to
submit documentation; where does it need to be sent?

A) Verification is a process where your school verifies certain data reported on your FAFSA. To complete this process, your school may ask you for documentation that supports income and other information reported on your FAFSA. These documents should be sent to The Marygrove Enrollment Center:

> Q) If I’ve previously received financial aid, can I skip Entrance Loan Counseling?

A) In most cases, only first-time borrowers must complete entrance loan counseling. You are considered a 'First Time Borrower' if you have never received a Stafford or Direct Loan (as an Undergraduate or a Graduate student). All first-time borrowers are required to complete Entrance Loan Counseling.

> Q) What is Elm Select?

A) ELMSelect provides student and parent borrowers with information supporting their ability to choose the educational lender of their choice.

Marygrove students may borrow from any lender that participates in the FFEL program that will approve loans to Marygrove students. The lender names we have provided are those that Marygrove students have borrowed from in the past. Each lender provides excellent customer service and automated application and funds delivery. Marygrove is neither endorsing nor recommending these lenders nor is our list a preferred lender list. Marygrove College does not receive any monetary benefit, reimbursement, or any other inducement from any lender. We encourage you to research borrower benefits for any lender you wish. You are not required to use a lender from our list. You can find alternative lenders by clicking the “Search for other lender” link or searching on your own. However, you may wish to contact us if choosing another lender so we can advise you if they will not lend to Marygrove students or if their loan process is not automated.

Special Note to Returning Student Borrowers — We recommend you borrow from your previous lender. If you choose a new lender you will be required to complete a new Master Promissory Note (MPN).

> Q) Can I begin the loan processing before I’ve accepted my award on WebAdvisor?

A) Yes, you may begin the loan process before you have accepted your award by visiting www.elmselect.com. You must still accept your award on WebAdvisor to complete the processing.

> Q) How many lenders can I apply for?

A) You may apply for one lender per loan.

> Q) How do I know if my loan has been approved?

A) You will receive an automatic email to your Marygrove account that the loan has been disbursed to your student account.

> Q) My loans have been disbursed to Marygrove College. Why does my student account still show ‘P’ or ‘Loan Pending’?

A) Some students may continue to see a ‘P’ or ‘Loan Pending’ on WebAdvisor, regarding their loan status. This status may remain until after the add/drop period of the semester.

> Q) When will I get my refund check?

A) Your school will first use the aid to pay tuition, fees, and room and board, if necessary. Money left over for other expenses will be processed and mailed to you directly within 2-6 weeks.

> Q) How do I notify Marygrove of my scholarships not included on WebAdvisor?

A) You may submit a copy of your scholarship letter to the Enrollment Center. You may also email the Enrollment Center at ec@marygrove.edu that you are expecting additional financial assistance. When received, we will add an estimate to your award package and make the necessary adjustments to your package.

> Q) How do I decrease the amount of loan I was
awarded on WebAdvisor?

A) To reduce the amount of loan, please forward your request from your Marygrove email account to the Enrollment Center at ec@marygrove.edu. Tell us how much you want and for each term. We will make the adjustment and email you when the adjustment is ready to view on WebAdvisor.

> Q) What happens if I drop or withdraw from my classes?

A) If you withdraw from your classes, some or all of the financial aid may be returned to the appropriate federal or state agency. Whenever you drop or withdraw from courses, you should contact the Enrollment Center to determine how it will impact your financial aid.

> Q) What is SAP?

A) Federal and state governments mandate the establishment and enforcement of a satisfactory academic progress (SAP) policy. Failure to maintain SAP requires the student receive financial aid on a probationary basis or that financial aid eligibility be cancelled all together until SAP as defined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) is met. Students have the right to appeal their status if they have mitigating circumstances they believe prevented them from maintaining or achieving SAP. Students are notified when they are not meeting SAP and told what they must do for continued aid eligibility:

Undergraduate students are considered to be making SAP and are financial aid eligible if they:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00.
  • Complete 67% of cumulative credit hours attempted.
  • Do not meet or exceed 192 credits attempted.
  • Are in good academic standing with Marygrove College.

Graduate students are considered to be making SAP and are financial aid eligible if they:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00.
  • Complete 67% of cumulative credit hours attempted.

Students who consistently fail to meet this standard may jeopardize their eligibility for financial aid, including student loans and work study. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) will notify you when your eligibility for financial aid is in jeopardy. The notification will include what you must do to regain eligibility or avoid losing eligibility.

TIP: The OSFA SAP policy may differ from that of Marygrove College. While a student may be considered in “good standing” with Marygrove College, they may not necessarily be making Financial Aid SAP.
